This is the story of a regiment at war, and of Jack, half retriever, half Balmoral sheep-dog. In a bloody battle in 1917, Jack is found by the Royal Dublin Fusiliers guarding his dying master, a young German. Gradually, he transfers his affections to Captain Tom Daly. Tom and the men of the Battalion are emotionally as well as physically scarred by the horrors of the trench warfare of World War I. Jack's presence gives them hope, as he, better than they, adjusts to a terrifying way of life - and death.
