The growing Smith family enlarges by four as girls orphaned by a hurricane have sent them into the hands of Child Protective Services. Ralph and Jessica Smith do not hesitate to take in the girls in need. With their eldest girl now returning from her residency at John's Hopkins as a doctor bent upon setting up a woman's hospital in their home community she examines the sixteenth girl in her own home and finds her pregnant - her very first patient. Educated at Oxford Dr. Susan Hayes becomes part of the staff of a small local hospital in need of serious restructure. When her reorganization suggestions begins to pay off with an increase in births there is help needed in the nursery. Another sister is brought in as a volunteer to help with the newborns. Carol Simpson loves caring for the little ones and before long she is given a paid volunteer position there in the nursery and given a uniform to wear. Thus while still in high school she begins her nurse training that will take her further than she ever imagined. This is her story along with the stories of her sisters.
