"As he strapped his bindings, Candace gazed over the fancy roof lines of Beaver Creek Resort. She could see down into the valley to the little town of Avon, then she looked up, across to peaks and ranges a hundred miles away, just as snow-covered and phenomenally incredible as the mountain she and Shane were about to ride. The stunning view was ever changing. To her left, the sun was setting; a giant, brilliant orange orb falling lower in a sky that had been an intense, cerulean blue all afternoon. It darkened slightly, which made the rosy orange streaks that glistened over the snowfield in front of them that much more tantalizing.
Shane tipped his board, sliding down towards her. “Candace?”
“It's just so beautiful here,” she breathed.
"It is.” Sliding closer until the edge of his board nudged the back of hers, his height and warmth and mass sheltered her from the rising wind. Then she felt a big glove on the flat of her belly. Giggling, she tried to push him away but he tugged, pulling her backward, and she fell against him in the powder. Am I actually in Shane McGreers lap? Skiers and snowboarders slid passed them, squeaking on the cooling snow, but it didn't matter, because Shane's long arms reached around her, so she was cosy and safe, nestled in his arms.
“What are you doing?” she asked, blinking.
He finished click-click clicking her bindings closed, then pulled his goggles up and tugged at hers, until they were up on the top of her helmet, too, and they could see each other's eyes. His held something for her, and she felt her insides soften; the space between their bodies was suddenly heavy with potency and it felt real, maybe more real than anything that had ever happened to her before.“I like you,” he breathed, running a cool gloved finger down her nose, so close now that Candace put a gloved hand against his chest.
“I like you, too,” she told him, smiling big, not knowing what else to say. She wasn't nervous around Shane anymore.
Even though he hadn't taken his eyes from hers. They were the blue-grey of the sky now. Sunlight sparked against them, against his cheeks, pale with cold. His chapped lips were close, then touching hers. Cool and dry for a split second, they warmed and became firm and searching, so it felt like she was melting inside, melting into him. . . .
So this was what kissing Shane McGreer felt like. . "
