Bongo Bradley, a kid from Harlem, spends the summer with relatives in North Carolina. He learns a lot about himself, his family, and his heritage as a black person. Bongo also learns that his country cousin; Vernon, knows a few things that life in the big city can't teach. The plot contains some mystery, but the novel is mainly interesting for its account of Bongo's thoughts and feelings.
