In the second Jan Birch Mystery, Jan takes a job as a waitress behind her husband's back. When the owner of the restaurant, Paul Bartholi, takes a near-fatal fall down the basement stairs, Jan quickly becomes convinced it wasn't an accident. She attempts to mind her own business, but when Paul's fiery fiancé tells the police Jan may have pushed her boss down the stairs, she has to act.
