If the dog goes, I'll leave you!"
Emma's words were firm, though she trembled inside.
"Oh, please," Jonathan gestured impatiently. "We're talking about a dog. A stray dog and a child who threw a tantrum."
"And we're also talking about a marriage based on mutual respect," Emma said evenly. "We're not in the same position as those who marry ... for love."
Their eyes measured each other. The silence seemed interminable. "I accept that," Jonathhan said as last. He turned and stared out of the window.
"We'll?" Emma asked when she felt she could bear it no longer.
"You leave me no alternative," he answered quietly. "One of us must keep a sense of proportion. Enjoy your victory. I suppose the dog must stay." Without another word and without looking at her, he stalked out of the room....
