Ann Kendal was happy to spend a few weeks in the Archinard mansion, cataloging paintings, photographs, and family papers while she sorted out her feelings for Bob Barnes. The young lawyer loved her and wanted to marry her, but she had to be certain she was ready for marriage. Meanwhile, old Madame Lisane Archinard was a difficult employer, but the job was only temporary, and Ann wasn't afraid of hard work.

She had hardly settled into the Archinard household, however, when she became aware that something was terribly wrong--and each day brought another strange question. Why was Mrs. Hillsop, the housekeeper, so frightened? Who was the hidden guest that no one would acknowledge? And why did Madame Archinard discourage Ann from seeing Bob and increasingly treat her as a prisoner? Soon Ann wondered if she would ever again see that man she loved--if she would ever leave the mansion alive...
