Amazon Grain
Crete faces ruin and starvation as a result of the great eruption. Hero and Aito organise merchants to charter ships and bring in grain. They face mutiny, pirates and storms which drive them to the coast of the savage Scythians who earmark one of the crew as a human sacrifice. Following this escapade, they land in Pontos where ruthless Amazons arrest them, as they allow no man to enter their territory.

Once the Amazons recognise her as the disgraced daughter of one of their leaders, Hero is in great danger of mutilation and slavery, as well as harbouring her overriding fear that her mother, an Amazon leader, will not be reconciled with her. She must literally fight a battle against overwhelming odds to prove herself and be accepted by her own people.

Meanwhile, Crete has gone to war with a powerful enemy, but Hero and Aito have enemies of their own in the tin syndicate whose reach penetrates even the highest levels of Cretan society. Grain from the Amazons will be paid for in blood, but, as an Amazon herself, Hero is prepared to face every ordeal with strategy, skill and courage.
