Sometimes the price of good fortune is too high. When giant media conglomerate American Communications offers Bob Macallan ten million dollars for his magazine, Elixir, he thinks all his worries are over. From a poor and loveless childhood he has scrapped and fought his way to the summit of the viciously competitive New York media world.
Now the big score is in reach. All Bob has to do is keep Elixir profitable for one year. It seems too easy. It is.
From everywhere, the vultures descend, attracted by the scent of big money - Bob's tough-guy sales manager, Leo; the satanic media kingpin Elton Mackey; the corporate gamesman Harry Woodcock.
While Bob fights to save his dream of riches and glory, he is lured by a dream of another sort: sultry, passionate Laura Chasen, who tempts him to leave his smart, beautiful wife, Wendy, and use his newfound money to explore a world of forbidden and delicious pleasures.
As Elixir's deadline nears, Bob must fight ferociously to save his ten-million-dollar dream, even as his weakness for Laura threatens his marriage. Then, just as Bob seems to have put all the pieces into place, he is rocked by a betrayal from the most unlikely source imaginable.
