Life in a post-civilisation world is split into two factions. Androids help the Few to uphold high standards in isolated Nubs while the Masses struggle to survive.

Thirty years after the Collapse, the Few have become antisocial. The death rate exceeds the birth rate by far. They are on the brink of extinction.

Valda, an android, improves herself beyond the capabilities of her kind. She can emulate human thought and emotions. Her passionate desire is to please her master, Martin.

She cannot bear his children so she encourages him to have relationships with human women who can. She becomes the driving force behind the changes that Martin wants to stimulate population growth and social interaction amongst the Few.

Beyond the security of the Nubs are countless treasures. The most important of which are books, music and other cultural artefacts. The Few have a wealth of technical and scientific data but practically nothing else.

Valda and Martin want to change that and recover some of their lost culture. They want to learn about the outside world where chaos has reigned. They are not even sure if there are any survivors. They also have some unusual ideas about how to boost the population of the Few.
