Kate is the privileged daughter of prosperous South African parents. When she returns to her native land with her American husband, who is part American Indian, her life becomes unraveled and hopelessly intertwined with the racial intolerance of her country. Upon the birth of her child, she must decide whether to return to America or stay in South Africa to protect her child's future as a South African citizen. Four generations of Kate's family struggle to overcome the injustices thrust upon them by the South African government. Kate's life undergoes great changes as she casts off her privileges as a white South African to become an activist in the anti-apartheid movement. She becomes an enemy of the government, hated by those seeking to retain the system of racial injustice and loved by those opposing it. Through three turbulent decades, Kate's life evolves from tragedy and failure to an interlude of hope and romance, then on to triumph and vindication.
