H.B. Holliday and his son were ranch owners just south of the Nueces strip not far from the town of Tilden, Texas. They were known to work a cowboy for a few months and then pay him very little or nothing at all. They were also known to be two logs short of a three-log load. Clay Burke was a well-liked and known as one of the best riders in the area.Three of his friends bet Clay that he couldn't work for the Holliday Ranch for six months and collect his entire forty bucks a month pay.Clay took them up on the bet and didn't have a bit of trouble getting hired, as no one else would work for the Hollidays. At the end of every month Clay would ask for his wages and would always be put off until the end of the next month. At the end of the sixth month Clay told them that he wanted his money or else. The Hollidays told him that his work was no good and that they were not paying him anything.Three minutes later Clay collected exactly two-hundred and forty dollars, after which he woke the two up with a bucket of water. The sheriff in Tilden begged Clay to leave town after Bub Holliday tried to kill him with a shotgun. Clay knew that if he stayed in Tilden that someone would end up dead-the town was not big enough for the three of them. He knew that the Hollidays were crazy, so he chose to leave on a trail to nowhere-where he hoped they could never find him. The Trail To Nowhere turns out to be a life-changing journey, leading Clay to a life he thought was impossible for a cowboy like him.
