It was sheer chance that honey-blonde Barbi Freeman met Vietnam veteran Ed Sterling, nephew of the head orthopedist at General, for it was only out of perfunctory politeness that she attended one of Dr. and Mrs. Sterling's weekly Saturday-evening get-togethers. Because of his blue jeans and slightly long, though clean, brown hair, Barbi immediately classified Ed as a hippie and therefore not in the category of men she would look at a second time.

Dark-eyed Dr. Gus Hertz, however, was another matter. Even though Barbi's job as a technician in the hemocytolysis laboratory separated her from the mainstream of hospital life, the blue-eyed beauty had not failed to notice the obvious charms of General's handsomest intern.

Ed, she had discovered, was a man who could not be judged on the basis of outward appearance alone.

Unbeknownst to Barbi, she has a third suitor. Meek, gangling Godfrey had never asked her out, but the shy lab assistant harbored a secret crush on the lovely nurse who had generously agreed to tutor him for a biology course. Despite the warnings of both Gus and Ed, Barbi could not bring herself to believe that Godfrey was anything but perfectly harmless…
