Into the solitude of the Angeles National Forest, located in the San Gabriel Mountains, come Sherman Kent, a sports writer, his son, Larry, and Jenny MacDonald, Mr. Kent's secretary. They have chosen to spend the summer at Mr. Kent's private cabin retreat so that Mr. Kent can recuperate from a heart condition and continue to write is novel. Jenny is grateful for the chance to be in this out-of-the-way place, she wants to escape from the painful memories associated with the death of her fiance, Gordon, who was the old son of Mr. Kent's.

But Jenny is destined not to be alone for long. Two young forest rangers, Mike Anders and Dan Cordell, seek out her company. Jenny is put off by the brusque manners of Mike and has trouble adapting to the teasing that Dan showers her with. She find comfort in befriending a six-year-old boy, Pauly Hinds, who lives up in the mountains with his parents.

It is during one of these times that the crisis occurs; a storm has swept over the mountains and is followed by the most dreaded thing of all, a forest fire. But out of the flames of destruction and ruin comes the rebirth of Jenny's quest for life and for love.
