New York editor Madeleine Rafferty discovers that her husband has involved their children in kiddie porn and flees the city for a remote Adirondack town, where more ominous and disturbing events threaten them...

She opened the back door. The sun was going down and there was a chill wind. She reached for the red-and-black-checked jacket that hung by the door and walked out.

The wind rushing up the mountainside almost took her breath away. Deep pewter-colored clouds tinged with dark coral from the sun's imminent departure scudded rapidly across the sky. She rounded the path to the laundry shed and was pleased to see the sheets had stayed on the line.

It still amazed her to see how rapidly night came on here on the mountain. The gathering dark was almost complete. In their shrill white contrast, the crisp stirring sheets seemed to give off a light of their own, a kind of phosphorescence.

She drew nearer to the clothesline and heard a sound that was distinctly out of harmony with the chorus of natural night noises all around her.

Just then, the sheets began to surge and rail an uncanny force. In a kind of frenzied animation, they suddenly swept directly toward her.

She was encircled. With a muffled scream, Madeleine fought to disentangle herself -- until her arms were yanked back and twisted painfully behind her. She was trapped.

A brutal, viselike grip held her totally immobilized.
