Description
PreS-Gr 1-Ribke explores shapes by describing various edibles, such as a rectangular cereal bar, a hexagon-shaped cracker, and an oval egg. Each item is described on a spread that includes a color photograph. The pictures are bland and uninteresting. For example, a triangular tortilla is shown on a red background. A child is pictured in a couple of photographs, but he is looking down at the food and appears to be bored. The writing style is clear but dry. The text is too difficult for most beginning readers, but the content would not be of much interest to older children who are reading independently. Stella Blackstone's Bear in a Square (Barefoot, 1998) and Ed Emberley's The Wing on a Flea (Little, Brown, 2001) are better, more vibrant introductions to the topic.-Heather Ver Voort, Washington West Elementary, Olean, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
