Newly rich, Philipa Lowe is returning home to England on the QE2. She need never work again, but already she is bored. Meeting Bella Fields, better known as the TV star Roma Felucci, is at least intriguing. There is an underlying tension about Bella, which Philipa cannot analyze. Is she in flight from something -- perhaps her husband? Or does she feel threatened by what is to face her in England? Philipa pursues her to Horesley Green, to find that Bella was wanted for questioning. She discovers that Bella's father disappeared ten years ago, and there was suspicion that he had been killed. Later, Philipa is present when proof of a death is uncovered. But to whom did the second skull belong?
