The staff at Fairview Hospital is like a family to Charlie until the day he finds himself an unwilling recruit of the Springfield Mob. His colleagues know something is wrong, but for their own protection Charlie can't tell them what's going on. He can't even tell his girlfriend, Patty, who wants a relationship not interrupted by late night secret absences and prolonged silent spells. While the action moves back and forth between the beautiful woods and lakes of the Berkshires, and the seedy back alleys and Mob safe houses of Springfield, Massachusetts, the reader is forced to share Charlie's ethical dilemma of whom to take care of, whom to protect, and how to save his own life.
