Is a conman always a conman? That's what Carl Duryea ponders as he's about to be released from Leavenworth Prison. The 4th of July, 1938 is a few days away and perhaps it's an omen. Hell, he liked the kid and anyone who knew Johnny would want to help out but...yes, it's that but. As in 'What's in it for me' kind of but. Yet, maybe his plans will come to fruition. Hard to know stuck in a cell for a few years. However, Carl needs a stake after partner stole the money they defrauded Wall Street. The sonovabitch took all the money they had acquired. So, maybe Fresno is the answer. A new beginning. Yet, there was the possibility that those who had made a patsy out of Blackham for the bank heist might make a patsy out of him...or worse.
