--they knew they were in this together, but they didn't how deep they were in it until they started asking questions somebody didn't want answered:

Why was this operation so secret that even the patient's name was concealed from them?

Why was every trace of the patient's stay at County Hospital carefully removed so that no one else could know that he had been there, and not even Mike or Julie could prove it?

Why were Mike and Julie deliberately lied to about the patient's true condition?
