The Fugitive Prince Oliver Cromwell had an obsession - to see the young, uncrowned head of Charles II on the end of a pike. Cromwell was one of the world's greatest military geniuses - better than Napoleon. He easily brushed aside young Charles' Scottish armies - then hunted him for months, all over England. Young Charles escaped to France - the French King gave a meager, starvation pension. Young Charles starved and froze for years. Cromwell hunted the young future Charles II of England relentlessly. He hunted Charles in England and Scotland, and sent assassins to murder him in France and Germany. Cromwell believed himself to be Divinely Chosen - the Kings with their Divine Right drove him mad. The English people and the Puritans never mixed. The English groaned under Cromwell. When Cromwell died, the most powerful general in Britain invited Charles back to the Throne. Charles disemboweled alive all the men who had signed to behead his father. Charles disinterred Cromwell's body and cut off its head, which never decayed. After a time on a pike for Londoners to see, a modern-day university sealed the head in a glass bottle, and for decades it held a door open. Some years ago, they buried it inside a biscuit tin, somewhere under a wide University lawn. Englishmen loved their drunkenness, feasting, dancing, whoring and going to plays. Cromwell wouldn't even let them celebrate festivities at christmas.
