Description
What does the usually urbane Niccolò Cérvantés de'Conti do when faced with an unscrupulous adversary? He calls upon his namesake, Niccolò Machiavelli, from across the ages for advice and counsel, of course. Nick de'Conti is in dire straits and he summons Machiavelli for guidance, across 500 years from the Renaissance. de'Conti, once the most prominent criminal defense attorney in the United States, emerged a broken man from his defense of the president of the United States for treason ( A Convoluted Defense ). He finds himself relegated to litigating an obscure construction case in the Deep South. The Bank of Osaka, his firm's client, lost $100 million. de'Conti's quest is to recover the bank's money. Having once led a life of unimagined success defending high profile clients in criminal cases, he is left to survive in an obscure world, chasing money for corporations. Rednecks and boors abound, where the cultural clash between North and South (New York City and Alabama) is palpable. Faced with an unscrupulous adversary, de'Conti is flummoxed as to how to counter the underhanded tactics of his rival. Machiavelli appears and advises his modern day Prince.
