A native of New York, he has tried ranching in Oklahoma, panning for gold in Colorado, and is now a farmhand in Virginia as a favor to his friend. Jess is ready to move on. He isn't sure what he's looking for, but he's sure he's going to find it in California, the land of opportunity.
