FBI Agent John Gibson finds himself re-assigned to investigate a mesmerizing heist from the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank that leads him to one of the oldest cities on the West Coast.

A second story set in the year 1818, when Monterey was the capital and jewel of Spanish Alta California, unfolds involving a gold chest, a conniving Russian explorer, and a threatening French pirate. A convoy departs on a journey to Monterey from Baja California. The expedition confronts a myriad of complications along the trail and carries with it a secret only known to a Franciscan friar. The friar must reach Monterey before it is destroyed and he lets nothing deter his mission, even if he must act in defiance of his vows.
