Sister Anna Mackay, newly back from holiday knew she would have to reach a decision about her direction soon, now that her mother's death had 'freed' her to make her own choices. Being knocked off her bike - at a crossroads - by the surgical registrar Dr Scott Carroll wasn't a good start. Destined to be at the hospital for a year, Dr Carroll had already developed a reputation as an ogre, but Anna suspected some deeper reason than mere irascibility. Finding out what it was only plunged her into worse turmoil herself!
