When a saddled stray horse was brought into the yard, Charley Simon was sent to backtrack and see if there was an injured or dead man in the mountains. What Charley found would change his life - a bull elk, trained by the inhabitant of a log cabin to trumpet if strangers were coming. The mystery thickened when Charley discovered the inhabitant was a leggy woman, and it was not to be resolved until strangers arrived with gunfire.
