Description
Just who was J.P. O'Francis? Was he the simple teacher that did not fit in the traditional “educational box”? Was he an unknown personality drifting through a bucolic life? Where, exactly, did the “O”Francis enigma” fit in the world? Or did he fit in at all? A few of O'Francis' longings are clear at the outset. He wanted to live a humble life, raise his sons in an unpretentious rural Appalachian Mountain community, free to be adventurous, enjoying a classic county life. His strongest yearning was to provide a modest living for the wife he lovingly adored, live happily, free from the stresses and worries characteristic of a congested city environment. Sadly, O'Francis would not find the solace he longed for and needed. Reflecting on the many years John Fredrick O'Donovan researched and interviewed with J.P. O'Francis, he continually attempted to understand all the turmoil O'Francis had endured. O'Donovan asked himself straightforward yet rhetorically pertinent questions: “Was O'Francis shrouded in a personality he had covertly concealed from everyone he loved and cherished in his life? More importantly, was this hidden persona of O'Francis' never to be revealed to society, unless under the most extreme circumstances? Was the other personality within J.P., the one that had nothing but emptiness in his eyes, reflecting no personal feelings? Did this alter ego he feared the most begin to escape from his self-imposed sanctuary?” O'Donovan realized that the citadel of protection O'Francis had constructed and securely hidden from everyone within the community he resided, seemed to be crumbling away as a result of the demands and stresses brought on by the powers-that-be in his professional life. If, for some unforeseen reason, that alter ego of O'Francis' was released, it would be for the justifiable motives brought on by mendacity, dissembling, and hypocrisy of the people surrounding him and his family, which would ultimately, yet regretfully, evolve into the pursuit of justice. That mission would be completed with a devastating finale, as the grim reaper may, very well, have his day. O'Donovan explores these and other difficulties through detailed interviews with O'Francis, which are revealed within this manuscript.
