Following the death of their mother, Angus Jack and his sister, Martha, have moved to Australia with their father to start a new life. they end up living in a bayside suburb, nextdoor to a peculiar old lady called Reafen, who is a second-hand dealer. To Angus and Martha, Reafen seems harmless enough - if a little odd. But she is in fact a goblin elder who has fled the Old Realm with a precious amber snowdome. Now living in the New World, Reafen kicks off a chain of events that draws Jack into the unravelling dramas surrounding the Old Realm, to which, unbeknown to Jack, he and his family have links to through their Viking heritage.
