Indian Winter — Jane Goldsmith

On a struggling Montana ranch in 1970, fourteen-year-old Winona dreams of escape from the cruelty of her stepfather and the narrowness of her surroundings. Increasingly aware of the entrenched bigotry of most (but not all) of her family and community, she finds herself attracted to Bell, a Native American. When an unexpected discovery turns Win's family upside down, not only they but the whole town must confront the consequences of their beliefs, and Win begins to grow up-fast.
