It was with great surprise that Paula Loring learned that she had been chosen to accompany the famous surgeon Robert Ainsworth on a research safari to Australia. Paula's chief, Dr. Carlisle made the announcement to her in the presence of Dr. Ainsworth himself, and although Paula had never met him before, she could not help but feel a sense of trepidation as she gazed at the tall, green-eyed young man whose reputation as a tough taskmaster was a well-known fact. And when Paula found out that many other nurses turned it down, she began to doubt that she was the right person for the job. But Dr. Carlisle did not agree with her.

For one thing, Paula was an orphan and therefore had not family ties, for another, she was well trained in orthopedics -- and this was the purpose of the trip. She and Bob Ainsworth were to team up with an Australian doctor, Guy Rennie, on an expedition to study the effects of primitive diet on the bone growth of aborigines. Their findings would doubtless prove invaluable for years to come.

And so it was settled, Guy Rennie, a blond good-natured giant of a man, met Paula and Bob at the Sydney Airport -- and the trek was on. It was not until later that Paula learned that the studies they were planning had all been done before -- and that the real reason for this venture was to lift Bob out of the depression caused by the recent loss of his wife…
