The women in these four stories lead lives far removed from the genteel upper-class drawing rooms of conventional mid-Victorian fiction. Elizabeth Gaskell's integrity of observation did not permit her to consign women like these to obscurity. Instead she chose to break with convention and to give us characters drawn from the women of her time as she saw them.
