New Horizons — Dan Carr

Valerie Campbell is a high school dropout without a life plan when she is taken from her home. It happens at 2:30pm in broad daylight while her father listens in the other room. It's a shock at first, but then she remembers the rumours-They take you. They treat you. They transform you. She goes limp, and lets the men take her away. Val is taken out of the province to "New Horizons", a wilderness facility for troubled youth. After a strip search, and a brief stint in solitary confinement, Val is placed in cabin 519 with five other delinquents. In denial about her belonging at the facility, Val clashes with several of the residents of the program, until one night she witnesses an escape attempt from fellow nutcase "Jenny Shoulders", who gives her a message before disappearing: Don't believe anything that anybody tells you. The counsellors deny an escape, but Val knows what she saw and makes it her mission to prove to the residents of the program that that the only way to get better is to get out.
