Meet Alan Bernhardt -- actor, director, playwright, and part-time PI. Gumshoeing for Herbert Dancer, Ltd. isn't the day job you'd expect for a San Francisco theatrical pro, but it pays the bills--and an actor's skills can come in handy in the routine business of everyday investigation.

Then a simple skip-trace gets more than routine, fast--when, only hours after Bernhardt reports Betty Giles' location, her boyfriend turns up the victim of a veryp rofessional hit. Has Bernhardt been unwittingly used to set the victim up? Agency boss Dancer doesn't want to think, about it -- doesn't want to know. Bernhardt wants to know.

Meanwhile, Betty Giles is running for her life -- and soon enough, so is Bernhardt, trying to stay alive long enough to protect her.
