Description
Set in 1980's London Cause and Effect is the story of Simon, a young man who hasn't quite lived up to his own and everyone else's expectations, due in part to his own laid back attitude and lack of self-confidence. Not to mention his desire to always take the easy option, like for instance getting another mate's girl on the rebound, or trying to make everybody like him by acting the clown and losing himself in a blur of alcohol and dope.

The trouble in no matter how he tries to fit in at work or with friends, he always finds himself the target of someone else's resentment, which they normally express in an unprovoked attack of physical violence.

The strange thing is, the more this happens to him the more his friends and family start to believe it is in some way his own fault, a situation that is exasperated by his unwillingness to prove otherwise.

Until eventually, one Friday after work, with all his bridges burned and when it seems likely he is going to be set upon by three young lads, Simon decides enough is enough and strikes out first.

And why not, what else has he got to lose, right?

Cause and Effect explores both the positive and negative effects the act of fighting back has on both Simon and those who are now his victims. It is a story of personal triumph, escalating violence and Simon's black humour that is fuelled by a desire to appear totally impartial as he metes out swift punishment to all those he believes deserve it.

“If you are expecting an easy read that you can sit down and read in a day Cause and Effect is not for you. It is definitely more of a thought provoking book, but if you can handle profanity and a bit of violence, it is still a good read.”
