Lawrence Bennet was the mayor of scenic, serene Sarahville. He was also a man with a scandalous past, an unsavory present--and too many enemies. Still, nobody expected him to be found the day of the big crafts carnival in the fortuneteller's tent--with a knife in his back.

But it's the Tarot deck spread out before the body--with the fool's card face up--that has Abby McKenzie spooked. She and her husband Mac, a former private investigator, had recently moved to town. Here she was, minding her own business, getting her arts & crafts store ready for an end-of-summer grand opening. But that was before she was paid a call by a neighborly psychic ... before Mac made some pretty weird discoveries of his own in an abandoned gravel pit haunted by the black-clad, curse-invoking town eccentric.

Now another village official has turned up dead. And it's starting to look like the whole town is under the evil spell of that old black magic ... called murder.
