Ivan, knowing the darker â€" more evil â€" side of vampirism, resists for the sake of her soul. Even though he loves her dearly, he cannot do it and knows he must find a way around their difficulties.

There is only one way Ivan can save Julianna from an existence which will cause her to prey upon her fellow humans â€" and that way ends in one of them sacrificing their life for the sake of the other.
