When she was shown her first view of the Southern Cross, Myra wished -- as what young bride wouldn't? -- for the success of her marriage; a marriage made at a few days' notice, and still full of uncertainties. But she had no real doubts until she reached Rio de Janeiro, "the Wonderful City, and found that her faith and love were to be stringently tested, and her whole happiness menaced, in a way that she had never foreseen. The story reaches an exciting climax amongst the flames of riot and the fury of a tropical thunderstorm.
