Where have all the brothers gone? Mark Lowery was a reporter at New York Newsday the first time he asked that question. During his daily commute from New Jersey, he couldn't help but notice how few people on the train looked like him. He saw some black males – the brothers who got on the train and tried to avoid paying the ticket collector, those who stood in the exit way of the train stations begging. And, of course, the daily parade of television images – athletes, artists, and criminals. But where were the real black men – the ones who worked long hours then went home to their families, the countless others striving to get ahead, searching for that big break?Lowery decided to tell their stories. The result is a provocative, in-your-face collection of short stories that highlights the good, the bad, and the pathetic, while challenging black males to take a collective look in the mirror.
