There is something exceptional about Argent Wood, a dignity and determination that set her apart from other young women of 19th century Europe. Indeed, that fateful morning Argent steps from the coach and confronts London's grime and congestion, her strong-willed heart sees only a city of beauty and dreams. Left penniless after her father's death, this beautiful girl with silvery blonde hair has resolved to make her way in a world that does not welcome women. First, she works as a ladies companion, then as a clerk, and, finally gaining her father's inheritance, she is able to enter a bold and profitable venture to buy half ownership in a cotton mill.

But even the most courageous of dreams have a way of shattering. And as Argent painfully finds herself at odds with a partner whose intentions -business and otherwise- are less than honorable, she also finds herself increasingly drawn to a handsome rascal name Rawson Carlyon. But Argent cannot know that Carlyon's rakish actions are merely a ruse to hide the fact that he leads a dangerous double life. And though his passion for Argent runs deep he is bound by duty never to reveal his true nature.
