About This Book

South Carolina natives Clyde Richards and his son Joe raise Arabian horses. When Clyde is forced to sell his herd to a syndicate in California because of a downturn in the market, the sale includes Joe's horse Firecracker. Joe is devastated by his father's deception and loss of the horse he loves. Gone is the shared dream of racing in the annual great American one hundred mile endurance horse race, the Tevis Cup, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Years later Clyde is on his way to retrieve the much-loved stallion and gain back his son's love. But the horse is in bad shape and Doctor Cindi Arters, a local veterinarian is ready and waiting Clyde's arrival. But Firecracker's wounds are deadly and as time ticks toward his death, Doc Cindi is able to artificially inseminate her favorite mare, Bint. Months later an invitation to Doc Cindi's house and Joe is introduced to Doc's new veterinarian assistant, Dennyse Danner and a dark, firey, bay mare, Bint Nefsaud who is carrying Firecracker's last foal. Another opportunity to dream. Joe falls in love with Dennyse Danner and finds that life is too short for regrets. Joe and Dennyse are married and the Richard's men are headed for the Tevis Cup. Clyde's horse left behind because of a mishap, Joe senses a deeping sadness in Clyde's voice. His father may not make another Tevis Cup. And beneath the shelter of the rugged Sierra Nevada range, Joe decides this race will be Clyde's to win or lose and it will be his father who rides his horse, America.
