Look inside the book:

But many years ago some one came to me with a request that I should go that evening to a certain street at King's Cross, where would be found a poor lady in great distress; that I should take a small sum of money which was given to me for the purpose in a little packet which disguised all appearance of coin, present it to her as a parcel which I had been desired to deliver, and ask if there were any particular service that could be done for her. ...When, after many generations, I see a traceless movement of the spirit of man like the one we are speaking of-a movement which, if it gains in strength and goes on to its natural end, will transfigure human society and make it infinitely more like heaven-I think the divine influence upon the development of man as a spirit may be direct and continuous; or, it would be better to say, not without repetition.

About Henry Harland, the Author:

Henry Harland (1 March 1861 - 20 December 1905) was born in Brooklyn and attended College of the City of New York and for a short spell Harvard divinity school. ...The first novels of this new period, Mademoiselle Miss (1893), Grey Roses (1895), and Comedies and Errors (1898), were praised by critics but had little general popularity.
