Jessica and Nick had worked through the problems that were between them. They had a chance to get to know each other as Jessica recovered from the shoulder wound she had received during the fight with Natalie. Then the news about Charles Anderson escaping from prison arrived at Jessica's ranch from the sheriff of Stockton. Mrs. Tyler led the way to the dining room. Jessica looked up from the table when Mrs. Tyler walked into the room. She saw Tom and Sheriff Spade come into the room behind Mrs. Tyler. Jessica asked, "When did he escape?" Tom said, "Last night." Nick and Mrs. Tyler had puzzled looks on their faces. Even Sheriff Spade was a bit puzzled. Tom was the only one who knew what Jessica was asking. Now trouble was at hand.
