Sarah Brenner, a young, widowed psychology professor, speeds down a rural road towards an isolated cabin that contains her computer and all the data she has privately amassed, information that could have ramifications beyond her wildest thoughts.
Three months earlier she entered an Alzheimer's study at her University. Statistics for the research are gathered using molecule size computer chips, encoded with DNA from the subject and injected into the bloodstream. The chips interface with a computer, all data relayed and stored for further analysis.
Funding is unexpectedly taken over by a new sponsor that she soon discovers is a clandestine federal agency with a very different agenda. Despite her efforts at hiding the truth the replacement researchers come to suspect that her data is different. Overcome with panic she takes flight.
Sarah miraculously avoids capture at the cabin, but led by a psychopath with mysterious psychic gifts of his own the Agency tracks her across the country in search of the secrets that may lie inside her head. Agent Hendricks at last succeeds in outwitting Sarah's ingenious attempts at elusion, but unbeknown to Hendricks as he closes on his quarry is how truly ingenious her new abilities prove to be.
