When Jim Cheverus left his hometown of Gloucester, MA, he was headed for the riches and glory of a major league baseball career. He was called a "can't miss" prospect. Baseball experts praised his talent. Newspapers wrote of his accomplishments and predicted a glorious future. Jim believed it all. He reported to the minor league team of the St. Louis Cardinals with big plans. "I'll be in the major leagues in two years," he boasted.
