The Rape

A sixteen-year-old woman from Kenya who resides in Harlem with relatives invites her school adviser to come to her home so he can counsel her on a problem she's having with her family. While the young woman is showing the adviser her room, something unexpected takes place that has far-reaching consequences and acutely changes the lives of all the characters concerned. When the author was a child, war broke out and he and his family were slated for death. Maurice and his mother smuggled themselves to Croatia the day before the scheduled execution. They moved from one place to another, bombarded, machine-gunned, pursued. They got to the US, where Maurice became an actor-director-writer on Broadway, TV, off-Broadway, and movies. A top fencer, he eliminated a reigning Olympic champion in an international tournament.
