Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), also known as "Boz," was the foremost English novelist of the Victorian era, as well as a vigorous social campaigner. Considered one of the English language's greatest writers, he was acclaimed for his rich storytelling and memorable characters, and achieved massive worldwide popularity in his lifetime. His works include: The Pickwick Papers (1837), Oliver Twist (1838), Nicholas Nickleby (1839), Barnaby Rudge (1841), A Christmas Carol (1843), Martin Chuzzlewit (1844), David Copperfield (1850), Bleak House (1853), Little Dorrit (1857), A Tale of Two Cities (1859), Great Expectations (1861), Our Mutual Friend (1865) and No Thoroughfare (1867). William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was an Anglo- Indian novelist of the 19th century. He was famous for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of English society. His works include: The Yellowplush Papers (1837), Catherine (1839), A Shabby Genteel Story (1840), The Irish Sketchbook (1843), The Book of Snobs (1848), Rebecca and Rowena (1850) and Men's Wives (1852).
