INTRODUCTION - Miss Yonges books have exercised a wide and wholesome influence on those of her own generation, and it has been said that few writers have done so much to mould the mind of the English girl, divine, demure. She was essentially earnest, and maintained in all her works a high standard of gentleness and grace. In The Little Duke we have an excellent example of the many stories Miss Yonge wove about the direrent manners of life among different peoples. Besides being a pleasant tale, designed partly to show the influence the Christian religion exercised as a civilizing force, it depicts in picturesque and faithful colours a Europe which has long ago passed away-a Europe in which only two figures were of grand importance the figure of the true knight, and the figure of the servant of Christ.
