At that time the population of the US was about 2,500,000 free whites and some 500,000 black slaves. We had gained our Independence of the Mother Country. John Alexander Logan (1826-1886) was an American soldier and political leader. He served in the Mexican-American War and was a general in the Union Army in the American Civil War.
