About This Book

In an apartment house in a low-rent district of a southern city, circa 1960, a young couple become involved in the dreams and schemes of the lower working class. Edwin Taylor is a recent high school graduate, burdened by the high expectations of his teachers and the haunting memories of his childhood. Sandy, his earnest young bride, struggles to help him overcome his self-doubts. Their fellow residents include a mentally deficient maintenance man, a sensuous thirtyish woman, and a would-be man about town. Edwin's new co-workers are the underachievers of the time. The relationships these individuals form determine Edwin Taylor's destiny in an unexpected way.
