Murdock McCabe, an American private investigator for a prestigious security firm based in Munich, works a murder case in the Bavarian Alps. The sudden demise of a local monk who is also a brilliant scientist perturbs any number of powerful paranoid higher-ups--including some staying at the same posh hotel as Murdock. Forced happenstance, superfluous explanation, and awkward dialog sometimes get in the way, but the complicated plot and diverse operatives should keep most readers going. A marginal purchase for larger collections.
